Aim & Overview
Nationally, the Supply Chains Centre; English Farming and Food Partnerships; Red Meat Industry Forum; Agricultural Development Scheme; Organic Action Plan and the Food Industry Sustainability Strategy are already in place and active in strengthening the food chain.
The challenge under this priority theme is to deliver social and environmental results on a foundation of profitable farming and food businesses. There is considerable potential for South West farming, food and drink businesses to develop by exploiting the growing consumer demand for locally distinctive, regionally associated and environmentally friendly food and drink products.
There are currently some 3,000 food and drink businesses in the region and at least 1500 micro-businesses providing significant local links in the food chain. In farming, there are almost 40,000 full and part-time businesses in the region. Barely 600 farming and food businesses employ more than 10 people; consequently the industry as a whole is fragmented.
Natural Unit Based Brands has been trialed in the Peak District and has proved very successful. Natural England as topic lead, is using this pilot as a basis for extended work in the South West region. They have developed a network of interested parties and have held various workshops, inviting speakers such the consultant who has carried out work in the Cotswolds area and the manager of Meat South West.
